Kids Making A Difference

Nineteen second graders have learned early in life the importance of helping others. Brownie Troop 518, from Christ the Teacher Catholic School, spent the past few weeks collecting shoes for Shoes 2 Share.

The girls spread the word about their service project through flyers. They invited the entire second grade to support their efforts. They even dipped into their own closets to find shoes they had outgrown.

The girls collected enough shoes to fill an SUV! They were very proud to know their hard work was going to benefit so many people.

These young philanthropists have shown their community that you are never too young to make a difference.

Last year our family started a new tradition of a charitable gift that our whole family would help to put together for a local family/families. This year I really wanted to head up this part of our party. I feel like the true spirit of the Christmas season can sometimes be clouded over by the stress of shopping and parties and decorating, etc…but to take time amidst the hustle and bustle to do something selfless for people in need that we don’t even know . . . to me, that IS Christmas spirit!

This year I entitled our charitable gift project, Christmas Shoes! My idea originated from a conversation with my sister talking about all the people in Haiti and around the world in need of shoes. So I started doing some research to figure out how to get shoes to Haiti. Eventually I came across Shoes 2 Share and started talking to Rhonda Wampler (founder) about donating shoes. Through our conversation I realized that I wanted to do something both on the big scale of donating shoes to help support a worldly cause, but I also wanted to do something on a smaller scale to help support some local families whom we could touch directly. I committed to Rhonda that we would donate gently used shoes to Shoes 2 Share and that we would also buy brand new shoes for 2 local families and to provide more gifts from a “wish list” for those families as part of the S2S 2011 Christmas “Share-a-Pair” event. I sent an email out to our family of nearly 41 adults and 23 children and within about three days the entire gift “wish list” for both families was satisfied! By the time we had our family Christmas party, where I collected the donations, ALL of the items on both the “needs” and “wants” wish lists had been purchased for these families in one way, shape or form. We also collected approximately 50 pairs of shoes to donate to Shoe 2 Share!

I was overwhelmed by how the whole family embraced this charitable gift project and all generously gave from their hearts to help support complete strangers this Christmas! “Random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty”—as I read before are “those beautiful, faceless, nameless people that do things that help out someone they don’t know and never will”. I’m honored to be one of those people! It was truly an honor to be the one to deliver all of the gifts, nearly 12 bags full of presents for two families we did not know and truly never will … “random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty” … that is what Christmas is all about!! Senior Ryan Donnelly led the drive to collect 37 bags of shoes for Shoes 2 Share. Asked why he chose S2S, Ryan said, “It’s not like the kids at Tatnall don’t have enough shoes, including myself, that they can’t spare a pair for people truly in need of them.” Senior Rachel Wolfs said, “It’s a great program, working for a great cause.”

I really wanted to express my gratitude for your business. The organization is making such a big difference in the world! I really appreciate Tim taking the time to talk to our group and share all his stories with us. Your organization is truly an inspiration. Tim inspired me to never give up on my dream of opening a community center. It doesn’t matter your AGE, your GENDER, your SIZE, or your EDUCATION when sharing is involved!

Our church is always looking for ways to help those in need. Every year we do several community outreach projects which require the financial support of the members of the congregation. As the Community Outreach Coordinator it is hard to ask the congregation to constantly reach into their wallets. Collecting used shoes for Shoes 2 Share was the perfect way to have an opportunity to help others without spending any money. Everybody has used shoes that are too nice to throw away. While researching shoe collection organizations on the inter-net I was disheartened to see that although several groups collected used shoes, nobody combined used shoe collecting with the message of the gospel. I found groups that collected used shoes with no gospel message and groups that promoted the gospel but wanted only new shoes or money donations. Finally after a few more keyword searches I discovered Shoes 2 Share. Once I read the story of how the Wamplers traveled to Haiti to secure the adoption of their children and began taking shoes in suitcases to give away, I knew that this was a story that I wanted to share with our congregation. Our congregation decided to collect shoes over a 3-4 month period but we were not sure how we would finance the shipping cost to get the shoes to Delaware. We felt that if we collected them the Lord would provide a way to get them to the warehouse. My husband and I had planned on exploring Pennsylvania this summer on our yearly vacation. We were also planning to visit some friends who lived in Philadelphia that we hadn’t seen in 7 years. When we realized how close the warehouse was to our friend’s house we knew that we would be able to combine our vacation with a shoe delivery. In order to keep the shipment reasonable in size we decided to just collect shoes from within our congregation. After seeing your operation first hand we would like to collect shoes again and open the donations up to the entire community. In His service Michele L. I recently had a lot of foot problems, as a result I could not wear most of the shoes I have accumulated over the years. I was so glad when your bin showed up at our church (Gumboro Wesleyan Church in Delaware) and I was able to put those shoes to a good purpose. I wanted to thank Shoes 2 Share again for the generous shoe donation for my client’s family. I delivered the gift bags after I left Shoes 2 Share on Friday. The family wasn’t expecting my visit, so they were thrilled to see the individual gift bags filled with shoes and the stuffed animals! “On Saturday, April 9, Midway Little League asked families to donate shoes on Opening Day for the second year. Our first season we collected approximately 4 barrels of shoes. This season we collected almost 5 barrels of shoes, 337 pairs. Jack Agnew, one of our managers, has a granddaughter who played softball for Tim Wampler at Caravel Academy. Last season the earthquake in Haiti had recently happened and Jack thought this would be a great way for our families to give back. The league decided to make this an annual event. Shoes 2 Share distributes thousands of shoes to orphanages, clinics, hospitals and to the homeless around the world including many programs here in America that support the elderly, disabled, homeless veterans, men, women and children’s shelters.”
